INGREDIENTS
- Cake:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 3 eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- Powdered sugar, optional
- Filling:
- 2-3 apples, thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cups caramel sauce, homemade or store-bought, divided
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
PREPARATION
- Preheat oven to 350º F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- For the cake, whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl.
- In a large bowl or mixer, beat together vegetable oil and sugars for 4-5 minutes, or until fluffy and lightened in color.
- Beat in eggs and vanilla extract, then gradually mix in dry ingredients.
- Pour half of cake batter into greased baking dish, then spread apples in an even layer on top of batter.
- Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on top of apples, then pour 3/4 cup caramel sauce over apples.
- Top apple layer with remaining cake batter, then drizzle remaining caramel sauce on top.
- Place in oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out mostly clean of crumbs.
- Remove from oven and let cool at least 15-20 minutes, then top with powdered sugar before serving.
- Slice, serve and enjoy.
