A couple unexpected ingredients are what make them special.
Homemade biscuits are a great addition to a meal; from breakfast to dinner, sweet to savory, biscuits are as versatile as they are delicious. If you haven’t made homemade biscuits before, this is a great first recipe to try. Drop biscuits are aptly named because they are simply “dropped†from a spoon onto a baking sheet. There’s no need to purchase any special ingredients because for the most part these are made with pantry staples. But when we do want to jazz up a plain ol’ biscuit, adding something sweet or savory is the answer. For this particular recipe we’re going with savory, adding diced ham and shredded cheese into the batter for a biscuit that is just super good.
Serves 12-16
30 minutes
INGREDIENTS
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 cup deli ham, diced
1/3 cup chives, finely chopped
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) cold, unsalted butter, grated
1 tablespoon honey
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
PREPARATION
Preheat oven to 450º F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
Whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, pepper and baking soda in a large bowl.
Using two forks or a pastry cutter, cut in cold, grated butter until mixture is coarse and pebbly.
Fold in cheese, ham and chives until just incorporated, then mix in buttermilk, sour cream and honey until just combined.
Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, drop spoonfuls of biscuit dough on lined baking sheet.
Place baking sheet in oven and bake for 12-14 minutes, or until just browned.
Remove from oven and serve warm. Enjoy!
